The Chief Legatee Anna Katharine Green 9781117707112 Books Reviews
A wealthy young couple very much in love get married.
Then she disappears on their wedding day. He is confused as would be expected, and seeks some help in finding her. She was an only child as her older brother disappeared at sea, and her twin sister was killed at age 5 in a fire at school.
Lots of twists and turns, as well as a secret society (common in the day, around 1900), all show up during the search.
The plot and book show their age, but are still interesting and a good read.
I'm so happy to see some of the great works of Anna Katherine Green; she has become one of my favorite writers, after I ran out of Christie's books to read. I found out that Agatha Christie, got into writing after reading Greens' books, who was a bestselling author who publishing about 40 books. I read she was first poet and later became a novelist to get attention to her poetry, however, she was so successful at mystery plotting, (she was an expert at the gradual unfolding of the mystery through the successful unearthing of clue after clue), that she dove right into mystery writing only.
She was one of the first writers of detective fiction in America and distinguished herself by writing legally accurate stories, something like Law and Order in the way that the stories are accurate and sometimes based on actual cases. Her many fans besides me, include such literary luminaries as Arthur Conan Doyle, Wilkie Collins, Mary Roberts Rinehart, and Agatha Christie. In fact, not just Christie, but Rinehart wrote that it was the novels of Anna Katharine Green which first inspired her to become writers of mystery fiction to.
The Chief Legatee - a Legatee is a beneficiary in a will - is one of my favorite Green best novels, and a great mystery, I'm such a fan, and so happy to have found these books, that a year ago I had never heard of. Here's how this mystery starts..." I was married today in Grace Church. At the altar my bride-you probably know her name Miss Georgian Hazen-wore a natural look and was in all respects so far as anyone could see a happy woman satisfied with her choice and pleased with the elegancies of the occasion.." But murder was in the card...not a honeymoon!
If you love a mystery, if you love Christie, or Rinehart, you'll love this book too! Green has the ability to make her novels feel rich and complete, and the mystery sound.
Now back to my mystery!
I recently began reading the novels of Anna Katharine Green, her name becoming familiar to me through an anthology of short stories. I had hesitated on reading her full length novels, not certain that her style could sustain an entire book.
Luckily for me and mystery fans alike she is a master of plotting. While some may find her writing a tad old-fashioned, I found it refreshing. Her novels are not dependent upon extraneous sex scenes, unrelated romantic entanglements, coarse language, etc., the fodder imparitive to fattening a short story into novella length in the novels of today. Here you will find strong characters, good writing and great pacing.
I found The Chief Legatee [don't be put off by the title] to be engrossing from the very beginning. The action starts right away and doesn't let up until the closing phrases. Even then, I wished for more! Highly recommend!
I liked this story very much. While I was reading, my batteries died, just as the final verdict was about to be disclosed. I had to impatiently wait until the next day! Talk about a cliff hanger!
Green, as always, holds attention and carries the reader along. But this is not a tale of mystery or detection, but rather a dated tale of shadowy nameless conspiracy. Overly complicated and unsatisfying.
This was my very first encounter with the writings of Anna Katherine Green. This book pulled me and didn't let me go, not even at the very end, when I wished it kept going. It was a cliff-hanger throughout, all the way until the last page. But I loved and cannot wait to read more of the wonderfully free kindle editions of this wonderful author!
